Purpose
This unit discusses disk arrays, backup solutions, and high-speed, high-
volume printers that you can offer to your Corporate Business System
customers.
Objectives
At the end of this unit, you will be able to describe high-end solutions
in the following areas:
o Disk arrays
o Backup solutions
o Printers
You will also be able to discuss HP's plans to support 3480-
compatible tape drives from StorageTek.
Introduction
The high-end customer must have reliable peripherals that have the
ability to store, protect, back up, and print an ever increasing amount
of data. Today's customers don't want equipment that interrupts on-line
users, that needs frequent operator intervention, or that otherwise
decreases the availability of the system.
HP peripherals have set an industry standard for reliability,
minimizing the expense and frustration of unexpected down-time.
This unit describes three groups of peripherals for HP's Corporate
Business System:
o Disk array technology for increased storage capacity
o Support of StorageTek's high speed 3480 tape backup solution
o High-speed, high-volume printing with HP's F100 printer
For more information on any of the products described in this unit,
please contact the appropriate sales and marketing center.
High-End Disk Array Solutions
HP Disk Arrays: The C225X Family
High-end customers want high availability solutions and low storage
costs, along with high performance. You can offer all this, plus more
with HP's family of C225X disk arrays.
The C225X disk array family offers increased disk connectivity, a
small footprint, increased availability, and controller flexibility.
The C2254HA and C2252HA spread or "stripe" data across two or four
disks, storing and protecting up to 2.7 Gbytes or 5.4 Gbytes of usable
data. Users may never know that a disk drive has failed or is being
replaced. Because these disk arrays include a data protection disk and
provide for the on-line "hot" replacement of a failed disk, users can
stay on-line without being interrupted when a disk drive is down. Under
this configuration, customers can get up to 43.5 Gbytes of storage for
each HP-FL interface.
The HP 9000 supports disk arrays in the independent mode, thus
improving I/O performance for certain file types.
HP's disk array technology is ideal for your Corporate Business
System customers. The C225X disk arrays offer high-end customers
increased storage capacity, high availability, increased performance,
and greater flexibility.
High-End Backup Solutions
Customers looking for high-end backup solutions want high performance,
compatibility with existing media, and cost effectiveness. While HP has
a full range of backup solutions, a high-end customer's needs will best
be met through HP's support of the StorageTek's 4XXX series of 3480
compatible tape drives, as well as HP's Optical Library System.
Half-inch cartridge tape by Storage Technology Corp.
High-end computing backup and StorageTek are synonymous. The majority of
mainframes or large system installations contain 1/2-inch cartridge tape
technology and/or a StorageTek SILO solution. HP's Corporate Business
System supports the StorageTek 1/2-inch cartridge tape solution.
Compatible with IBM's 3480 technology, this cartridge tape solution
offers the high performance required by customers using mainframe-class
systems.
By using multiple tape drives with autochangers, an unattended backup
capacity of over 16 Gbytes is possible.
By using TurboStore/iX on the HP 3000 for software data compression,
you can offer even greater performance and capacity.
HP Optical Library System
The HP Optical Library System is the solution for a maximum capacity
unattended backup on the HP Corporate Business System.
On an HP 3000 using TurboStore/iX and software data compression, the
Optical Library System can perform up to 35 Gbytes per hour with four
autochangers with a capacity of up to 70 Gbytes.
On the HP 9000 using HP OmniBack/Turbo, the Optical Library System
can perform up to 24 Gbytes per hour with four autochangers with a
capacity of 80 Gbytes.
The Optical Library System can also be used for on-line archival
storage of infrequently accessed data. Although the Optical Library
System is not a random access device, when used in this manner it can
provide a cost-effective alternative to either on-line hard disks or
off-line tape storage.
High-End Printing Solutions
HP 5000 Series Printers
Your mainframe printer customer is looking for an effective way of
handling high-volume output. Applications such as billing, invoicing,
financial statements, and direct mail can generate hundreds of thousands
to millions of pages per month, and require a quality presentation.
Your customer will want a printer that handles very large capacities
at printing speeds of 100 pages per minute or more and that has
LaserJet-quality resolution. Also they will need sophisticated page
formatting tools that can scan images or signatures, that can generate
logos or graphics and merge electronic forms with OLTP data. Your high-
end customer requires robust spooling capabilities, including page-level
error recovery and secure spool files. Paper handling equipment, such as
roll feed input, bursters, or envelope stuffers may also enter into the
picture. With the HP 5000 series of printers, you can offer your
customer all this, plus the ability to route output to compatible
printers across the network, from the desktop to the data center.
HP 5000 Model F100 Printer
The printers,F100 printer is the first product in a new family of
printers targeted for mainframes. It has twice the speed and duty cycle
of the HP 2680 printer. The F100 printer can be directly connected to HP
Corporate Business System systems. It uses the HP PCL4 printer language,
an industry standard established by the HP LaserJet Series II printer.
It uses fanfold paper and offers a resolution of 300 x 300 dpi. (The HP
2680A prints 180 x 180 dpi.) It can print 100 pages per minute, and 2.8
million pages per month.
HP's Vision for the Future
HP will continue to offer improved disk arrays, backup devices, and
printers that are faster, more powerful, and cost-effective.
For backup devices, you can offer customers the future possibility of
SILO support, which will accommodate six thousand 3480 tapes. This will
give unattended backup of 6000 x 200 Mbytes or 1.2 terabytes of data. In
addition, HP is investigating 3490 tape support.
For printers, you can look for the HP 5000 printers,F135XP printer at
the end of 1992. This printer will print a wide line of 17 inches so
that customers can print two 8.5 by 11 pages simultaneously. This means
that the printer can print a wide page at 135 pages per minute and two
8.5 by 11 pages at 210 pages per minute.
An upgrade to the F100 printer for the F135XP will be available in
the fourth quarter of 1992.
